Silver Jewellery Guide
Everything to know about 92.5 sterling silver, and how to keep it shining.
What 92.5 (925) silver means
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, mixed with a little copper so it is strong enough to be worn every day. Pure silver on its own is too soft for jewellery. The mark 925 on a piece tells you its purity.
Gold-tone and plated finishes
Many silver designs have a warm gold-tone finish. The silver underneath stays 92.5; the finish is a thin layer on top, so treat it gently and keep it away from perfume, water and harsh rubbing.
Keeping silver bright
- Put jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray
- Take it off before bathing, swimming and exercise
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing
- Store each piece separately in a dry pouch or box; an anti-tarnish pouch helps
- If it dulls, a silver polishing cloth brings the shine back. Avoid polishing gold-tone finishes hard
